The choice to move my loved one to Special
Care is the most difficult thing I have ever done. How can you help me
make the move?
Our theme is "The heart of St. Andrews
is caring." You will feel that caring and support as we walk with
you each step of the way. You will be able to spend time together enjoying
meals, walking in our gardens, and attending activities, if you wish.
Family support sessions will give you assistance emotionally and educationally.
Our experienced staff will even teach you how to say good bye when you
leave to go home.
How
do residents spend the day?
Our entire staff spends the day making
residents happy. We offer music and art therapy led by professionals.
You will find pets and children visiting St. Andrews. Exercise, walks
in the garden, trips out to lunch, or rides in our van all fill our
days. Our beauty shop is part of our "glamour days," and we
enjoy projects such as making bird feeders. If you look around, you
may even see us at our local ice cream shop. We enjoy celebrating life.
Can
residents go outdoors?
Many activities take place in the garden.
We plant flowers and vegetables. You will find people planting, watering,
weeding and some will just "smell the roses." You will see
families having picnics and enjoying fruit from the trees in our orchard.
Our garden is fenced and locked, which allows residents to spend time
outside.
Can
residents be awake and out of their rooms at night?
We have staff that is awake and available
to meet the needs of our residents. We offer snacks, watch "old
time movies," and gently re-direct back to sleep.
What
type of staff training do you offer?
All employees receive ongoing specialized
training that promotes caregiving with respect and sensitivity to individual
differences. Our staff meets monthly with Joyce Beedle, RN, BSN, for
intensive training sessions. Ms. Beedle is a specialist in Alzheimer's
caregiver education with 13 years of experience, and she is available
as our consultant. Our RN, Janet Hofman, also has monthly training sessions for all nursing
staff.
Do
you have any other professional consultants to assist your staff?
Dr. Harry Krulewitches is our Director of Medical
Services. Our "Dr.K" visits weekly to see his patients and to consult with our nursing staff regarding their care.
We also work closely with The Alzheimer's Association,
which offers wonderful support for the family and friends of residents.
